Evolution Lesson 1 – Faulty Fundy Logic http://www.adcombat.com/ubbADCC_Forum/ubb/For um1/HTML/042480.html" title="http://www.adcombat.com/ubbADCC_Forum/ubb/For um1/HTML/042480.html" target="_blank"http://www.adcombat.com/ubbAD...
Evolution Lesson 1 – Faulty Fundy Logic
what we have learned from studying how people decide and conclude in jury trials is hauntingly familiar to the faulty logic of fundamental creationists...people have two significantly different approaches to decision making: they are either cognitives or affectives
15% of jurors are cognitive left brain decision makers..cognitives are more interested in problems than people, they enjoy learning and accumulating new information, they defer making decisions until they have all the available information...cognitives use a combination of inductive logic and deductive problem solving....in short, affectives feel and cognitives reason
85% of jurors are affective right brain decision makers...affectives are likely to decide, conclude, and attribute cause and blame quickly...affective persons are emotional, creative, and impulsive and are more interested in people than problems...they see trials as soap opera dramas not legal disputes...affectives have a few premises about how life works and use little factual information to reach decisions
affectives don’t have open minds and are not receptive to new ideas...instead they test new information by how consistent it is with their preconceived ideas of how life works and how it fits into the picture of the case they have constructed in their minds
jurors rapidly construct stories of what probably happened in the case then subconsciously use their attitudes to accept, reject, or distort the evidence or supply missing information to create a complete plausible story...this lets jurors reach decisions they believe are logical, fair, and consistent with the evidence
affective reasoning is based on the improper use of deductive logic...affectives decide and conclude first then facts are made to fit...affectives know the truth first, as they have constructed in their minds, and they work hard to justify their absolute truth by selectively accepting, rejecting or distorting later information to fit the already reached decisions...this allows affectives to justify their decisions; thus they believe they are logical and fair
people have an internal need to be consistent which makes them committed to their original decision despite their receipt of later conflicting information...since information inconsistent with their decisions causes internal conflict and stress, they become resistant and soon hear and see only what they want to hear and see
just like affective reasoners in jury trials, the logical thought process of creationists is backasswards...creationists start with the conclusion and declare its absolute truth (the bible)...then they search for gaps (things not yet figured out by scientists or issues scientists debate) or anything else they can to support their religiously motivated bs while selectively disregarding the gazillion pieces or evidence that support evolution
anyone educated properly in science will spot the faulty logic of starting with an absolute truth...that’s just bad science...real science works opposite...real science says: we have all of these facts, all this observed phenomena...what best explains them
in science truths are conditional and facts are important...for creationists truth is absolute and facts are selected or rejected based on religious bias
it’s interesting that 85% of jurors are affective thinkers and 88% of the US population does not understand or accept biological evolution as accepted by the scientific community...interesting correlation...i wonder how many of the OJ jurors were creationists...lmao
Evolution Lesson 2 - Facts and Theories http://www.adcombat.com/ubbADCC_Forum/ubb/For um1/HTML/042512.html" title="http://www.adcombat.com/ubbADCC_Forum/ubb/For um1/HTML/042512.html" target="_blank"http://www.adcombat.com/ubbAD...
science starts with inductive logic...we observe facts...the world’s data..observable phenomena...things that actually exists and can be viewed with our own eyes...facts are true unless the observer made a mistake
examples of facts: one can observe a moth that looks like bird sh*t...or observe whale fossils with pelvic, thigh, and foot bones for walking on land...or observe natural speciation in action etc etc etc
then comes the proper use of deductive logic...after observing facts, scientists formulate an explanation, ie a hypothesis, to explain what we see
but instead of declaring the absolute truth of the hypothesis, as the fundys do, science sets out to systematically test the explanation by trying to falsify it...scientists test and try to falsify their own hypothesis...this is the scientific method
the scientific method involves the observation of phenomena, formation of a hypothesis to explain the observed phenomena, experimental and predictive repeated testing of the hypothesis, and after repeatedly reconfirming your hypothesis, graduation to theoryhood.
scientific theories such as biological evolution, cell theory, heredity, plate tectonics, gravity, etc are accepted as true after they have survived numerous attempts of falsification and when they continually predict new phenomena that are subsequently observed
example:
facts - whales breath air and have bones for walking on land
hypothesis - since whales breath air and have bones for walking on land, then the ancestors of whales used to walk on land
test - if whales used to be land animals then the fossil record should show a transition from land animal to ocean animal
confirmation – transitional fossils found include basilosaurus, rhodocetus, and ambuloceuts…ambulocetus is the walking whale with foot bones, hind leg bones, etc
conditional conclusion – whales used to be land animals but they evolved into sea animals
note that this is a scientific conclusion and therefore it is conditional...there are no absolute truths in science...if you find a better explanation for what we observe and you can test it via the scientific method, science welcomes this...you just have to play by the rules of the game
the whale example is just one of many that supports biological evolution...religiously motivated fairytale explanations from creationist websites are not facts
the scientific method has explained more of the empirical world than any alternative approach yet creationists reject the scientific method for the absolute truth of the bible
it’s pathetic how fundys have no problem acccepting the fruits of science, ie, the technological byproducts of science that make life better for humans...fundys are hypocrites for selectively accepting science when it is convenient but rejecting science when it disagrees with their interpretation of their book...pathetic and dishonest imo
Evolution Lesson 3 – Myths and the Process of Science
What is it that makes biology, chemistry, geology, physics, etc different from history, literature, philosophy, religion???
The difference is that science is a process...science should be looked upon as a verb not a noun...it is action...systematic methodical action to discover what is true and what is not true regarding our universe
IT IS THE APPLICATION OF THIS PROCESS IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, GEOLOGY, ETC THAT MAKES THEM SCIENTIFIC...such a fundamental misunderstanding about science has led to very poor decisions about how to teach science...hence you have fundys promoting ID and trying to change the definition of science
biological evolution is a scientific theory, not a religious doctrine or a topic in philosophy class...religion and science are compatible...but are different animals
religion has to do with the worship of god whereas science deals with physical phenomenon of the natural world...religion has to do with faith and the unseen whereas science focuses on the empirical evidence and testable knowledge open to rejection or confirmation...SCIENTIFIC THEORIES STAND OR FALL BASED ON THE EVIDENCE
religion is based on faith which is belief without evidence...those who claim that evolution requires belief or a leap of faith do not understand the way science works
scientists do not have to believe without evidence (faith) that there are transitional fossils, we can observe the evidence in museums, the fossil record, and in living creatures today...scientists do not have to believe without evidence (faith) that the building blocks of life can be created naturally or that speciation occurs...we can observe it directly in nature and/or the laboratory
THE TESTS ARE REPEATABLE WITH COMPARABLE RESULTS FOR YOU TO TEST AND SEE FOR YOURSELF
Myths are fictitious stories about heroes, deities, angels, demons, saints, virgins, wars, plagues etc. designed to teach spirituality and ideology...jesus spoke in metaphoric and mythological terms regularly...his parables and the myths of the old testament were the means of expressing spiritual truths not scientific truths
myths of creation, birth, rebirth, and renewal are found in the bible are common in every culture, around the world, and over the millennia...the ancient myth of creationism was present long before the old testament was written...they were rewritten in the bible and accepted as absolute truth by fundys...the fundys took a beautiful story of creation and ruined it by declaring its absolute truth
myths are not about truths...myths are ancient stories past on to teach about deeper meanings of life, rebirth, and renewal...myths are about the human struggle to deal with life’s challenges...myths and religion meet different psychological/spiritual human needs and have nothing to do with science
religion exists based on faith which is belief without evidence...for creationists, faith is belief in spite of the evidence
